Introduction to Communication

The first of three required communication courses for majors, this course examines the historical and intellectual development of the field. Students survey the origins of contemporary theory; learn about fundamental concepts, models, investigative tools and contexts of communication; and explore a wide variety of professional opportunities awaiting communications graduates.

Introduces you to a variety of communication theories that explain human interaction at the interpersonal, group and organizational levels. You’ll be able to apply these theoretical lenses to evaluate real-life communication situations.

This course teaches you how to effectively communicate in virtual settings by learning about videoconferencing, online writing, social media and business presentation skills. The class meets entirely online and is self-paced, meaning you work at times that fit your schedule. This course requires you to participate in weekly discussions, complete weekly assignments and upload coursework for assessment. You can earn credit for this course even if you’re not a full-time student. This course is a great choice for students who plan to enroll in a 100% online program.

Interpersonal Communication

Interpersonal communication is an important aspect of life, whether it’s among friends or coworkers. It can also take place in interactions mediated through communication technologies. National University’s interpersonal communication classes examine these issues, helping you understand the complexities of verbal and nonverbal communication. You’ll learn how the conscious and unconscious codes people send each other affect their relationships, as well as the impact of language, emotions, body posture and misunderstandings.

You’ll also explore how to improve your own one-on-one communication by learning strategies like perception checking, emotional mapping and I language. This is especially relevant to students who plan to pursue careers in business, education, human services or social work.

You’ll also get an opportunity to practice your public speaking skills through intercollegiate forensic competition or by preparing for oral interpretation of prose, poetry and drama. You’ll also have the option to complete an internship in a field related to your career goals. This advanced-level course can count as a professional development requirement and elective for your major.

Organizational Communication

Communication is central to organizational life, whether in the creation and maintenance of a company’s culture, or the exchange of information between employees. Coursework adopts a communication approach to explore how people organize and communicate with one another, focusing on issues such as interpersonal relationships, power and control, organizational socialization and diversity at work.

Students develop an understanding of organizational communication in the context of their own careers by exploring how they can connect communication concepts to personal and professional experiences and future plans. Students will also create a final portfolio to highlight their accomplishments and to help prepare them for graduate school or professional employment.

Mass Communication

Mass communication studies provide you with an in-depth understanding of how media functions and influences society. You will become informed contributors in the fields of journalism and broadcasting, as well as gain a deeper understanding of how these forms of media have shifted to a digital landscape.

In this course, you will learn how to create professional communications such as emails, memos, social media posts, negative and persuasive messages, presentations and reports. You will consider communication variables (audience, purpose, role and cultural context) as you examine different types of professional communication situations and create various written documents. You will also participate in two one-hour synchronous meetings per term as you discuss and explore topics related to the online world of communication, including virtual teamwork and collaboration, and computer mediated interpersonal communication.
